Possible explanations

A sharply defined bright-red patch on the white of the eye may come from a small surface blood vessel leaking beneath the clear covering. Irritation, coughing, rubbing, dry eyes, contact lenses, and some medicines can contribute. Diffuse redness with discharge may fit Conjunctivitis, while itching and watering may fit Allergic Conjunctivitis. Appearance alone cannot distinguish every cause.

Practical care

Avoid rubbing the eye and wash your hands regularly. Do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops.
