Recurring strep throat: what to know

Strep throat is a bacterial throat infection that can cause sore throat, fever, tender swollen glands and painful swallowing. A new episode may be a fresh infection, incomplete recovery, or symptoms from another illness rather than strep. A positive test during one episode does not explain every future sore throat. Record when symptoms begin, whether fever is present, and whether treatment was completed as prescribed.

Arrange a GP consultation when symptoms return, especially with fever, swollen glands or marked swallowing pain. The clinician may inspect the throat and use a swab or other test. Take prescribed antibiotic treatment exactly as directed; do not use leftover tablets or share them. Rest, drink fluids, use separate cups and wash hands while unwell. Replace or clean frequently handled personal items as advised if reinfection is a concern.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe dehydration, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, or swelling that is clearly worse on one side. Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms are worsening, returning soon after treatment, or accompanied by a persistent high fever or unusual weakness.
