What should you know about recurring sore throat?

A sore throat can accompany a Common Cold, Influenza, COVID-19, Tonsillitis, Strep Throat, or Glandular Fever. Allergic Rhinitis may cause mucus to drain down the throat, while Acid Reflux can irritate it without a typical burning sensation. Dry air, smoke, vaping, mouth breathing, and heavy voice use can add irritation.

Record whether episodes include fever, cough, runny nose, swollen neck glands, tonsil changes, rash, hoarseness, or heartburn. These details help distinguish infection from irritation, but symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

Drink regularly, choose warm or cool soothing fluids, rest your voice, and avoid smoke or other inhaled irritants. Handwashing and avoiding close contact while unwell can reduce spread of respiratory infections. Do not use leftover antibiotics; a clinician can decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

If nasal allergy or reflux symptoms accompany the throat pain, discuss those patterns with a pharmacist or GP. Seek advice before using medicated throat products if you have other conditions or take regular medicines.

Arrange a GP review when sore throats keep returning, last longer than expected, affect swallowing, or come with persistent hoarseness, swollen neck glands, or repeated fever. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe one-sided swelling, confusion, or rapid deterioration.

Ask whether the pattern fits infection, allergy, reflux, or another irritation; whether a throat test is needed; and how to manage symptoms safely. Mention recent illnesses, exposure to infection, smoking or vaping, and every medicine you use.
