What should you know about recurring boils?

A boil is a tender, infected lump that forms when inflammation and pus build up around a hair follicle or nearby tissue. It may begin as a firm red area and become softer as fluid collects. Boils commonly occur where skin rubs, sweats, or is irritated. Repeated episodes can be linked to bacteria on the skin, friction, shaving, or a problem that keeps the area inflamed. A painful skin lump is not always a boil, so a clinician may need to examine it, particularly when it returns.

Use a clean warm compress for comfort, keep the area covered if it drains, wash hands after touching it, and avoid squeezing, cutting, or sharing towels and razors. Launder clothing and bedding that contact drainage. Medical care may include antibiotics for a skin infection or abscess drainage when a pocket of pus needs to be opened safely. Treatment should be selected after examination rather than by reusing leftover medicine.

Arrange a review for repeated boils, a lump that is growing, or drainage that does not settle. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, red streaks, marked swelling, or a boil near the eye, nose, or genitals. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or poor circulation should seek advice early.

Ask whether the lump needs drainage, whether a sample should be tested, how to protect nearby skin, and what may be driving recurrence. Ask how to recognise a new infection before it becomes larger or more painful.
