Bright-red streaks after wiping may follow hard stool, straining, skin irritation, a small tear, or swollen veins. The paper pattern cannot confirm the cause, and the amount may be hard to judge.

Bowel inflammation, Diverticular Disease, polyps, and growths can also cause visible blood. Bowel Cancer or Rectal Cancer is not diagnosed from toilet paper alone; symptoms such as a lasting bowel change, mucus, tiredness, or weight loss make review especially important.

Avoid vigorous wiping and note whether the blood is bright red, whether it follows straining, and whether it returns. Record constipation, diarrhoea, urgency, mucus, pain, fever, and medicines that affect clotting.
