Rectal bleeding from wiping

A small streak on toilet tissue can follow hard stool, straining, frequent wiping, or irritation around the anus. Haemorrhoids and an anal fissure are common local explanations, especially when there is soreness or itching. Bleeding can also occur with Gastroenteritis or inflammation from Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Polyps and bowel cancers, including Bowel Cancer and Rectal Cancer, can present with rectal bleeding. The appearance on tissue cannot identify the cause by itself.

Clean with water or unscented damp tissue and pat dry rather than rubbing. Keep stools soft with fluids and fibre if these are suitable for you, and avoid straining. Note whether blood is only on tissue or also coats or mixes with stool. Arrange a GP assessment if it returns, continues, or comes with a change in bowel habit, mucus, abdominal pain, fatigue, or weight loss. Further tests may be advised based on your history and examination.

Get urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, repeated bleeding that does not settle, black or maroon stool, clots, dizziness, fainting, severe pain, fever, or marked weakness. Seek prompt advice if you take blood-thinning medicine or have a known bleeding disorder. Emergency assessment is appropriate if you feel faint or unwell while bleeding.

Ask whether the pattern fits an anal cause, whether you need an examination, how to prevent straining, and which bowel changes require further investigation. Mention constipation, diarrhoea, pain, itching, medicines, and any family history of bowel disease.
