Recommended deodorant for dark underarms

Underarm darkening can follow repeated irritation from fragrance, preservatives, shaving, friction or a reaction to a product. Inflammation may leave post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after the skin feels better. Moisture and skin-on-skin rubbing can also contribute to intertrigo, especially in warm folds. Dark colour is not automatically a sign of poor hygiene, and deodorant alone may not remove established pigmentation.

Look for a plain formula labelled fragrance-free and made for sensitive skin. Apply a small amount to clean, completely dry skin, and stop if there is burning, swelling, marked itching or a new rash. Do not apply deodorant immediately after shaving or over broken skin. Loose, breathable clothing can reduce rubbing. Arrange a dermatology review if darkening is spreading, becomes thick or velvety, or appears with persistent itch, pain, scaling, odour or drainage.
