What should you know about rechargeable tens unit?

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. A small battery-powered device sends pulses to electrodes placed on intact skin near, but not directly over, the painful area. The sensation may feel like tingling or tapping; it should not be sharply painful. The effect varies between people and may help you move or rest more comfortably, but it does not repair the underlying cause. A rechargeable model replaces disposable batteries with a built-in battery that must be charged according to its instructions.

Read the device instructions and begin with a low, comfortable setting. Place pads on clean, dry skin, keep them apart, and check the skin after use. Do not use the unit while driving, sleeping, bathing, or showering. Keep cables and electrodes away from the front of the neck, head, eyes, and broken or infected skin. Ask a clinician before use if you have a pacemaker, implanted electronic device, reduced sensation, epilepsy, pregnancy, or an unexplained pain pattern. Use TENS alongside a plan that addresses movement and the source of pain.

Stop using the device if it causes burning, a rash, marked irritation, dizziness, or worsening pain. Seek medical assessment for new weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe injury, fever, or pain that is rapidly worsening. If pain keeps returning or limits daily tasks, arrange a clinical review rather than increasing the stimulation indefinitely.
