What is the reason for whole-body itching?

Dry air, frequent hot showers, and harsh cleansers can weaken the skin barrier. Itchy inflamed areas may reflect Asteatotic Eczema, Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis, or Lichen Planus. Raised welts suggest Hives, while intense night-time itching affecting close contacts can point toward Scabies. Moist skin folds may develop a Skin Yeast Infection. Itching without a clear rash can also need a broader medical review, particularly when it is persistent or accompanied by fatigue, weight change, fever, or yellowing of the skin.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after washing, choose lukewarm water, keep nails short, and wear loose breathable clothing. Stop any newly introduced scented product if it may be irritating you, but do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Note when the itch began, where it is strongest, what the skin looks like, and whether anyone else is affected. A clinician can match treatment to the cause rather than treating scratching alone.

Get urgent help for itching with swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Arrange medical review for severe sleep-disrupting itch, open or infected skin, a new widespread rash, or symptoms that persist despite gentle skin care.
