Possible explanations

After menopause, lower oestrogen can make vaginal and cervical tissue thinner and more prone to irritation or bleeding. Menopause may also bring vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex. Polyps, pelvic organ prolapse, medicines, infection, or changes in the womb lining can cause spotting. Womb Cancer can present with bleeding after menopause, but spotting alone does not establish that diagnosis.

Book an appointment with a doctor or gynaecology service, including when the blood appears only on toilet tissue. Record the colour, amount, timing, possible triggers, pain, discharge, and medicines. Assessment may involve an internal examination, an ultrasound, or a sample from the womb lining, depending on your symptoms and examination findings. Do not delay because the bleeding is light.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, dizziness, fainting, severe pelvic pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. Arrange prompt review for any bleeding after a long period without periods, repeated spotting, bleeding after sex, or bleeding with unusual discharge.
