Reason for spotting after intercourse

A small amount of blood may come from delicate tissue at the vaginal opening or cervix, especially when there is not enough lubrication or sex is more vigorous than usual. Infections such as Chlamydia can inflame the cervix and cause bleeding after contact. Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can also present with bleeding after sex; this symptom does not show that either condition is present. Polyps, fibroids, and changes in the womb lining are other possibilities.

Note when the spotting occurred, how long it lasted, its colour, any pain, discharge, or bleeding between periods, and whether pregnancy is possible. Pause penetrative sex if it brings on bleeding or pain. Arrange a clinical assessment when spotting happens again, continues, or occurs with unusual discharge. An examination may include looking at the vagina and cervix, testing for infection, and checking that cervical screening is up to date.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with bleeding. Contact a clinician promptly if bleeding follows sex repeatedly, occurs after menopause, or comes with pelvic pain, unpleasant discharge, or pain during sex.
