What should you know about reason for sore throat?

Short answer
A sore throat is commonly caused by inflammation from a respiratory infection, allergy, acid reflux, or irritation of the tonsils and throat lining.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main process
- Inflammation or irritation in the throat
- Possible clues
- Cough and runny nose, fever, reflux, allergy, or swollen tonsils
- Urgent warning
- Breathing trouble or inability to swallow saliva
How the symptoms fit together
A common cold, influenza, or COVID-19 may cause throat soreness with a runny or blocked nose, cough, fever, aches, or tiredness. Most people with strep throat notice a sudden painful throat, fever, tender neck glands, and difficulty swallowing, often without a cough; testing may be needed because symptoms overlap. Tonsillitis can cause enlarged, red tonsils and sometimes visible patches. Glandular fever may bring pronounced fatigue and swollen glands. Allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat through post-nasal drainage, while acid reflux may cause burning, hoarseness, or a sensation of a lump. Dry air, smoke, and voice strain can add irritation.
What may ease it
Rest your voice, drink cool or warm fluids according to comfort, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid smoke and other throat irritants. Follow label directions for any pain-relief medicine and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, giving medicine to a child, or managing another condition. Do not use leftover antibiotics: many sore throats are viral, and antibiotics help only selected bacterial infections after clinical assessment.
When to seek care
Arrange an examination for severe or worsening pain, symptoms that do not improve, repeated episodes, high fever, a rash, dehydration, or difficulty opening the mouth. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs can indicate an airway or deep throat problem.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern fits a viral illness, strep throat, tonsillitis, allergy, or reflux; whether testing is useful; and which symptom relief is appropriate for you.

Questions people ask
Does every sore throat need antibiotics?
No. Many are caused by viruses or irritation; antibiotics are used when a clinician finds a bacterial infection that warrants them.
Can acid reflux cause a sore throat?
Yes. Reflux reaching the throat can cause burning, hoarseness, throat clearing, or soreness, sometimes without classic heartburn.
