What should you know about reason for runny nose?

A clear watery discharge with sneezing, itchy eyes, or symptoms after exposure to pollen, house dust mites, or pets fits allergic rhinitis or another allergy pattern. A common cold often adds a blocked nose, cough, sore throat, or feeling unwell. Influenza and COVID-19 can also include nasal symptoms, particularly with fever, aches, cough, or marked fatigue. Facial pressure, reduced smell, and thick discharge that persists or worsens may occur with sinusitis. Cold air, smoke, strong scents, and changes in temperature can trigger a non-infectious response. A runny nose alone cannot identify one cause.

Drink fluids, rest, and use saline nasal spray or rinsing if suitable for you. Wash hands and avoid sharing towels or utensils when an infection is possible. Reduce exposure to smoke, fragrances, dust, or a known pet trigger. A pharmacist or clinician can explain which treatment fits allergy or infection symptoms; avoid using decongestant nasal sprays longer than the product instructions allow. Consider testing and staying away from vulnerable people if respiratory infection is possible.

Arrange medical advice when discharge lasts longer than expected, repeatedly returns, is one-sided with a bad smell, or comes with facial swelling or significant pain. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Children who seem unusually drowsy or cannot drink need prompt assessment.
