Reason for frequent thirst

Thirst is the body’s request for more fluid. It may increase after sweating, fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, salty meals, or prolonged time in a hot environment. Dry mouth can feel like thirst and may be linked to mouth breathing, anxiety, or medicines. Ongoing thirst together with frequent urination, unusual tiredness, blurred vision, weight change, or recurrent infections can reflect a problem with blood glucose or fluid balance. A dry mouth from reflux or Gastritis-related discomfort can also be mistaken for thirst, so the full pattern matters.

Drink water regularly and consider whether heat, exercise, illness, diet, or a new medicine preceded the change. Keep a short record of drinks, urination, sleep, and associated symptoms. Avoid trying to correct persistent thirst with very large amounts of fluid at once, particularly if you have heart or kidney disease. Arrange a clinical review when thirst continues, wakes you, or comes with increased urination or other new symptoms. A clinician may check medicines, hydration, urine, and blood glucose.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or signs of severe dehydration. Sudden thirst with marked drowsiness or rapidly worsening illness also needs immediate assessment.
