Reason for continuous hiccups in old age

Short answer
Continuous hiccups in an older adult may reflect stomach irritation, reflux, medicines, or another condition needing assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can mean
Hiccups are repeated involuntary contractions of the breathing muscle. They can follow a large meal, fizzy drinks, sudden temperature changes, or swallowing air. Persistent episodes can also occur when the stomach or food pipe is irritated, including with Acid Reflux or Gastritis. A new medicine, a change in dose, or difficulty swallowing may be relevant. Less commonly, problems affecting nerves, the chest, or body chemistry can keep the reflex going. Age alone does not identify the cause, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
What to do now
Record when the hiccups began, how often they interrupt sleep or meals, recent medicines, and any relation to eating. Take small sips of water, eat slowly, and avoid alcohol, fizzy drinks, and very large meals while symptoms continue. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Arrange a medical review if the episodes persist, return repeatedly, or make eating, drinking, sleeping, or breathing difficult. A clinician may review medicines and examine the abdomen, chest, and nervous system.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, new confusion, fainting, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also sensible when hiccups occur with fever, severe abdominal pain, black stools, or a new swallowing problem.
Questions for your doctor
Could a medicine or reflux be contributing? Do my other symptoms suggest stomach, chest, nerve, or metabolic testing? What should I do if hiccups stop me eating or sleeping?

Questions people ask
Can reflux cause ongoing hiccups?
Reflux can irritate the food pipe and trigger hiccups in some people, but persistent symptoms still deserve an assessment.
Should an older person wait it out?
Brief hiccups may settle, but ongoing episodes should be discussed with a clinician, especially when meals, sleep, or fluids are affected.
