What should you know about the reason behind hiccups?

Short answer
Hiccups happen when the diaphragm contracts suddenly and the vocal cords close briefly, often after a minor irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why hiccups start
Eating quickly, eating a large meal, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, laughter and emotional stress can trigger short episodes. Irritation of the nerves involved in breathing or digestion can also contribute. Acid Reflux may irritate the upper digestive tract and trigger hiccups, while Gastritis can cause stomach irritation with nausea, discomfort or early fullness. Medicines, recent surgery or a neurological or chest problem are less common possibilities when hiccups persist.
Ways to settle an episode
Breathe slowly, take small sips of water, and pause before eating again. Smaller meals and slower eating may reduce repeat episodes. Avoid fizzy drinks and alcohol if they trigger you. Do not use frightening, forceful or unsafe tricks, and never try to hold your breath until you feel distressed. If reflux symptoms accompany the hiccups, a pharmacist or clinician can discuss suitable treatment, including Acid Reflux Medication.
When to contact a clinician
Seek medical advice when hiccups continue, repeatedly interrupt sleep or eating, or make it difficult to drink. Arrange prompt care if they occur with severe chest or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, confusion, weakness or a new severe headache. A clinician can review medicines, examine you and look for an underlying cause rather than treating the sound alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether reflux, stomach irritation or a medicine could be contributing; what food or drink changes may help; and whether persistent hiccups require examination or prescription treatment.

Questions people ask
Are hiccups usually serious?
Short episodes are usually harmless and settle on their own. Persistent or disruptive hiccups need assessment for an underlying cause.
Can reflux cause hiccups?
Yes. Acid irritation can stimulate the digestive and breathing pathways involved in hiccups. Repeated episodes with heartburn should be discussed with a clinician.
