What should you know about really dry skin on face?

Short answer
Really dry facial skin usually needs a simple, fragrance-free routine that protects the skin barrier while you look for triggers such as over-cleansing, irritation or an inflammatory skin condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why facial skin can become very dry
Facial skin can lose protective oils after hot water, repeated cleansing, exfoliating acids, retinoids, shaving or exposure to dry air. Tightness, fine flaking, rough texture and stinging after products suggest that the barrier is irritated. Redness and itch may occur with atopic dermatitis, while asteatotic eczema is another possible cause of marked dryness. Psoriasis can affect the face too, although its pattern and scale need clinical assessment. Dryness around the nose or mouth may also be worsened by rubbing, saliva or frequent tissue use.
A new product is not always the only trigger. The timing of symptoms, other affected sites and whether the skin burns, itches, cracks or weeps can help distinguish irritation from an underlying condition.
A gentler facial routine
Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, using fingertips without a brush or scrub. Pat dry and apply a bland cream or ointment while the skin is still slightly damp. Reapply when tightness returns. Emollient therapy supports the barrier, but choose a product that does not sting and introduce one change at a time. Pause exfoliants, fragranced products and non-essential active ingredients during a flare. Use sunscreen once the skin tolerates it, and avoid rubbing or peeling flakes.
When facial dryness needs review
Book a medical review when facial dryness persists despite a gentle routine, keeps returning, spreads, or interferes with sleep or daily comfort. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, blistering, crusting, pus, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, eye involvement or fever. Around the eyes, avoid applying medicated products unless a clinician has advised where and how to use them. A clinician can check whether a medicine, contact reaction, eczema or psoriasis is contributing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which ingredients to stop or continue, whether your pattern suggests irritation or eczema, what moisturiser texture is suitable for the area, and how to manage dryness near the eyelids, lips or nose without causing further irritation.

Questions people ask
Can moisturiser sting very dry facial skin?
Yes. A damaged barrier can react to otherwise tolerated ingredients. Stop a product that causes marked burning and choose a bland, fragrance-free option for assessment.
Should I exfoliate facial flakes?
Avoid exfoliating while the skin is dry, sore or stinging. Scrubs and acids can deepen irritation; moisturising helps loosen surface scale more gently.
