What should you know about RB1 immunohistochemistry?

A pathologist applies an antibody to thin sections of tissue. If the target protein is present, the stain creates a pattern that can be seen under a microscope. The report may describe RB1 as retained, reduced, or lost, depending on the staining pattern and the laboratory's interpretation.

RB1 is involved in controlling how cells move through the cell cycle. A staining result is one part of the tumour assessment; it does not by itself name the cancer, establish its stage, or predict exactly how an individual will respond to treatment. The meaning depends on the tissue appearance, sample quality, other markers, and clinical findings.

Ask the treating team to explain whether the stain was technically adequate, what pattern was seen, and how it fits with the diagnosis. If the sample came from a biopsy, the pathology findings are considered alongside imaging and examination rather than read in isolation.

Keep a copy of the full pathology report. Clarify whether additional stains, molecular testing, or review by another pathologist could help when the result is unusual or does not match the rest of the findings.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing trouble, sudden weakness, confusion, or uncontrolled bleeding; these symptoms need assessment regardless of an RB1 result.
