What should you know about razor rash on legs?

Shaving can remove the surface oil that protects skin and can irritate follicles as hair begins to grow back. Bumps may be more noticeable around knees and ankles because those areas are easy to nick and rub against clothing. Dry scaling or a rash outside the shaved areas may suggest Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis instead. A circular, expanding patch can fit Ringworm, while a reaction after a new shaving product can fit Contact Dermatitis.

Leave the razor aside until redness and tenderness improve. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser. Avoid hot showers, exfoliating gloves, tight fabrics, and picking at bumps. Keep the razor clean and dry; next time, soften the hair first, use shaving gel, and glide with light strokes in the direction of growth. If a product stings, rinse it off and do not reuse it.

Contact a clinician if redness keeps expanding, the area becomes hot or very painful, bumps contain pus, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Get advice when the rash repeatedly returns despite changing technique, or when it lasts beyond a reasonable settling period. A clinician can check for folliculitis, allergy, eczema, or fungal infection.

Ask whether the rash is follicle irritation or another condition, whether you should use a particular cleanser or moisturiser, and which hair-removal method is least irritating for your skin.
