Razor rash on the buttocks: what to know

Shaving can leave short, sharp hairs that irritate follicles as they grow. The buttocks also experience pressure from sitting, rubbing from clothing, and moisture after exercise. Small uniform bumps may be follicle irritation; itchy patches in a fold can instead fit intertrigo. Scaly plaques or a ring-like edge may suggest psoriasis or ringworm. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause, particularly when the rash is spreading or recurrent.

Stop shaving the area and avoid picking or squeezing. Shower after sweating, use a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and change damp clothing. Select loose, breathable fabric and take breaks from prolonged sitting when practical. A cool compress may reduce discomfort. Avoid abrasive scrubs and heavily fragranced products. Once the skin is clear, consider trimming rather than a very close shave, and use a clean razor with lubrication if you shave again. Persistent pustules or tenderness warrant advice from a clinician or pharmacist.

Arrange prompt care if redness spreads, the area becomes hot or increasingly painful, pus appears, a large tender lump forms, or fever develops. Have recurring, very itchy, scaly, or non-healing areas examined. A rash that remains despite stopping shaving may need a different diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Ask whether the pattern suggests folliculitis, ingrown hairs, intertrigo, eczema, psoriasis, or a fungal rash; what to apply safely; and whether trimming would reduce repeated irritation.
