Razor rash on armpits: what to know

The underarm is warm, folded skin exposed to rubbing and moisture. A close shave can create tiny surface injuries, while deodorant or antiperspirant may sting freshly shaved skin. Bumps centred on hairs can reflect ingrown hairs or follicle inflammation. A rash that extends beyond shaved areas, forms a clear scaly edge, or affects both armpits after a new product may suggest contact dermatitis, heat rash, or another condition rather than simple razor irritation.

Leave the area unshaved until it feels comfortable. Wash with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, rinse well, and pat dry. Choose loose clothing and change out of damp garments. Avoid deodorant, perfume, exfoliating acids, and rough scrubbing while the skin is sore. When you resume, use a clean sharp razor, shaving gel, light strokes in the direction of hair growth, and a fresh rinse; do not share razors. A clinician or pharmacist can help select treatment if bumps are persistent or pustular.

Get medical advice for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, a firm tender lump, fever, or redness that spreads. Seek assessment if the rash repeatedly returns, interferes with arm movement, or does not settle after stopping the trigger. A persistent underarm rash may need examination for infection, eczema, psoriasis, or a product reaction.

Ask whether the bumps are follicle-related, whether your deodorant or shaving product could be contributing, what can be used safely in the fold, and which hair-removal method is least irritating for your skin.
