Razor rash in the genital area: what to know

Tiny red bumps, stinging, itching, or tenderness can follow a close shave, especially where hair, sweat, underwear, and skin friction meet. A bump around a hair may be an ingrown hair or follicle irritation. Burning that follows a fragranced wash, shaving gel, or deodorising product can fit contact dermatitis. A spreading, scaly, ring-shaped, or very itchy rash may have another cause, such as ringworm or scabies, and should not be assumed to be razor rash.

Stop shaving, waxing, and plucking until the surface is calm. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and wear loose, breathable underwear. A cool, clean compress can ease heat and itch. Avoid scrubs, alcohol-based products, perfume, antiseptics, and picking at bumps. Do not put products inside the vagina or on mucosal tissue. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a simple barrier or other treatment is suitable for the exact area.

Arrange medical assessment if pain, warmth, swelling, pus, blisters, ulcers, fever, or rapidly spreading redness develops. Seek prompt advice for sores, unusual discharge, pain when urinating, or concern about a sexually transmitted infection, because these symptoms need a different assessment. Also book a visit when the rash keeps returning, leaves dark marks, or does not improve after avoiding shaving and irritants.

Ask whether the bumps fit irritation, ingrown hairs, folliculitis, infection, or another rash; which products are safe on external genital skin; and how to remove hair later without reopening the irritation.
