Razor Burn Rash

A razor can scrape the outer skin, while friction, sweat, pressure, and fragranced products can add irritation. The rash often appears soon after shaving on the face, neck, legs, underarms, or bikini area. It should not be diagnosed from appearance alone: Contact Dermatitis may follow a new gel or aftershave, and Atopic Dermatitis can flare with skin barrier damage. A ring-shaped, spreading, or scaly rash may need assessment for Ringworm.

Stop shaving the area until it feels comfortable. Rinse with lukewarm water, use a cool compress, and apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser. Wear loose clothing where rubbing occurs and avoid scrubs, alcohol-based products, picking, and repeated passes with a razor. For future shaves, soften hair first, use a clean sharp blade, shave in the direction of growth, and reduce pressure. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a short course of a suitable anti-inflammatory product is appropriate for the body area.

Seek medical advice if the rash is rapidly spreading, very painful, warm, draining pus, associated with fever, or not improving after shaving stops. Widespread rash after a new medicine needs prompt review for Drug Rash. Rash in warm skin folds may be Intertrigo, while intense night itching affecting household contacts can occur with Scabies. Heat Rash is another possibility when sweat and blocked pores are prominent.
