What should you know about razor bump rash?

Razor bumps can appear as red, itchy, or tender spots around recently shaved hairs. Irritation tends to follow friction or a close shave. Contact dermatitis may follow a new shaving gel, fragrance, aftershave, or metal exposure. A rash that spreads beyond shaved skin, forms a ring, becomes scaly, or itches intensely at night may need assessment for another cause such as ringworm or scabies. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis can also affect areas that are repeatedly irritated.

Stop shaving the rash temporarily and rinse away fragranced products. Clean with a gentle, non-perfumed wash, pat dry, and apply a bland moisturiser if the skin is not weeping. Keep the area cool and reduce rubbing from tight clothing. Avoid scratching and do not apply multiple active products at once, because this can obscure the pattern or intensify irritation. Note when the rash started, what touched the skin, and whether anyone close to you has similar itching.

Seek prompt medical advice if the rash rapidly spreads, becomes painful or hot, blisters, drains, affects the eyes or mouth, or comes with fever or breathing difficulty. Arrange an appointment when it persists after stopping the suspected irritant, repeatedly follows shaving, or has a ring-like or intensely itchy pattern. A clinician can examine the distribution before recommending treatment.
