What should you know about razor bump pus?

A small white or yellow spot may form when a hair curves back into the skin and irritates the follicle. Folliculitis is inflammation of a hair follicle and can also produce tender bumps with drainage. Pus alone cannot identify the cause or show whether treatment is needed. The area may be more vulnerable to irritation after close shaving, friction, or picking.

Pause shaving, waxing, and plucking over the area while it settles. Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, pat dry, and use a clean warm compress for comfort. Do not squeeze, pierce, or dig for the hair; these actions can push inflammation deeper and increase marks. Wear loose clothing where friction is involved, and avoid sharing razors or towels. A clinician can advise whether a topical or oral medicine is appropriate.

Arrange medical care if redness expands, pain becomes pronounced, the skin feels hot, drainage keeps returning, or several bumps develop. Seek prompt help for fever, chills, red streaks, swelling near the eye, or feeling markedly unwell. Repeated bumps on the beard area may be pseudofolliculitis barbae rather than a one-off irritation; a dermatologist can confirm the pattern.
