What should you know about razor boils?

A boil often begins as a painful, firm area and may later develop a pus-filled centre. Shaving can create tiny breaks or irritate follicles, while friction, sweat, and picking can worsen local inflammation. A cluster of boils, a soft centre, or a lump that keeps enlarging may indicate an abscess rather than a simple surface razor bump. Skin lumps and painful skin have several causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm infection.

Keep the area clean and cover it loosely if it drains. Warm, clean compresses may ease discomfort and encourage natural drainage. Do not squeeze, lance, or share towels, razors, or clothing that touches the spot. Stop shaving nearby until the skin has healed. A clinician may recommend antibiotics for skin infection when appropriate; a collection of pus may need abscess drainage by a trained professional.

Get medical advice promptly if the lump is rapidly growing, very painful, draining heavily, surrounded by spreading redness, or accompanied by fever or chills. Seek urgent assessment when it is near the eye, nose, or genitals, or when you have a condition or medicine that weakens immune defences. Do not wait for home care if several painful lumps appear.
