Short answer

Razor blade bumps are inflamed spots caused when shaved hairs curl back into the skin or irritate a follicle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger
Close or repeated shaving
Avoid
Squeezing and picking
Comfort measure
A warm compress

What razor blade bumps can mean

They may look like small red, brown, or skin-coloured bumps, with itching, tenderness, or a visible trapped hair. Curly or coarse hair, close shaving, friction, and repeated passes over the same area can make them more likely. A pustule may point to inflammation around the follicle; widespread or worsening spots can also fit folliculitis. Keratosis pilaris can cause similar rough bumps but is not limited to recently shaved skin.

What to do now

Pause shaving or plucking the area while it settles. Wash gently, apply a warm compress, and avoid squeezing, scratching, or digging for the hair with a needle. When you shave again, soften the hair first, use a clean sharp razor, shave in the direction of growth with light pressure, and avoid stretching the skin. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing on body areas. If episodes keep returning, a dermatologist can discuss prescription care or laser hair removal.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if bumps are very painful, filled with pus, spreading, repeatedly returning, or leaving thick scars or persistent dark marks. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing redness, or red streaking. A clinician can distinguish ingrown hairs from infection and choose treatment safely.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be folliculitis or pseudofolliculitis barbae? Which shaving method suits my hair and skin? Would prescription treatment or laser hair removal help prevent recurrences?

Questions people ask

Are razor blade bumps the same as ingrown hairs?

They can be related: an ingrown hair curls into the skin, while a razor bump can also result from surface irritation around a follicle.

Can I shave over a razor bump?

It is usually kinder to pause until the area is calmer, then use gentle, growth-direction shaving with minimal passes.
