Can raw eggs cause food poisoning?

Illness may follow raw egg in homemade sauces, batter, desserts, or lightly cooked dishes. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever. They may begin after a delay, so the most recent meal is not always the source. Most treatment focuses on fluids and rest, while a clinician considers the severity, your health, and whether testing is useful.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially after vomiting or diarrhoea. Resume light foods when you can tolerate them. Wash hands with soap, clean contaminated surfaces, and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Do not take leftover antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicines without medical advice. Keep a record of fluid intake, urine, symptoms, and the raw-egg food you ate.

Seek prompt medical care if you cannot keep fluids down, pass blood, develop severe abdominal pain, become confused or faint, or urinate much less than usual. Arrange early advice for a young child, an older adult, pregnancy, or a weakened immune system. IV fluids may be needed when dehydration is significant or drinking is not possible.
