What should you know about rate of spirometer?

Spirometry commonly records the amount of air exhaled and the speed of the forced breath. Clinicians compare the result with expected values based on factors such as age, height, and sex, then consider whether airflow changes after an inhaled medicine. A single reading does not explain every cause of breathlessness or cough.

Effort, a poor seal around the mouthpiece, posture, recent illness, smoking, and medicines can affect results. The number should therefore be read alongside symptoms, examination findings, and the quality of the test.

Follow the testing team’s instructions about inhalers, smoking, meals, and exercise. Wear clothing that allows comfortable deep breaths, arrive rested, and tell the team about chest pain, recent surgery, infection, dizziness, or medicines. During the test, seal your lips around the mouthpiece and keep exhaling until instructed to stop; several attempts may be needed.

Spirometry is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek immediate help for severe breathlessness at rest, blue lips, fainting, new confusion, chest pressure, or rapidly worsening breathing. Tell the testing team at once if a manoeuvre causes marked dizziness, chest pain, or distress.

Ask which measures were recorded, whether the effort was acceptable, what the pattern suggests, whether inhaler testing is planned, and what follow-up will clarify the result.
