What should you know about raspberry leaf tea and VBAC?

Raspberry leaf tea is a herbal drink used by some pregnant people late in pregnancy. It is not a test of the uterus, a way to assess scar strength, or a method for selecting a birth route. Evidence about whether it prepares the body for labour is limited, and herbal products can vary in strength and ingredients.

VBAC means vaginal birth after caesarean. Suitability is considered individually, including the type of uterine incision, reasons for the previous caesarean, other operations, pregnancy complications, and the maternity unit’s ability to respond if urgent care is needed.

Tell your obstetric or midwifery team about every herbal product you use or are considering. Ask when, if ever, it is appropriate for you and whether it could interact with medicines or affect contractions. Do not use tea as a substitute for antenatal review or an agreed labour plan.

Discuss monitoring, pain relief, induction options, and what would prompt a caesarean birth. Keep your previous surgical records available if possible, since the uterine incision matters more than the skin scar.

During pregnancy, contact your maternity unit for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions, reduced fetal movement, or severe abdominal pain. With a previous caesarean, sudden persistent scar-area pain or feeling faint during labour needs immediate assessment.
