Rash with pustules on the arm: what to know

A pustule is a raised spot filled with cloudy fluid. Several irritated follicles can produce a clustered rash, while friction, sweating, shaving, or an occlusive product can worsen it. Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis may become bumpy and inflamed, and some inflammatory conditions can resemble infection. Ringworm usually produces a scaly edge rather than true pustules, but appearances overlap. Increasing warmth, tenderness, swelling, or drainage needs an examination because a bacterial process may require specific treatment.

Wash gently with water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry. Do not pop, lance, or scrub the pustules. Cover draining spots with a clean dressing, wash hands after touching them, and avoid sharing towels, razors, or clothing. Pause new creams and avoid shaving over the area. Take a clear photograph and note spread, pain, itch, fever, and recent exposure to friction, sweat, or a new product.

Seek same-day care for rapidly expanding redness, severe pain, marked swelling, red streaks, fever, chills, or feeling very unwell. Get emergency help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, confusion, or widespread skin peeling. Arrange an appointment if pustules recur, fail to settle, or leave sores and crusting; treatment depends on the cause and may involve a swab or prescription medicine.

Ask whether the spots arise from follicles, allergy, or infection; whether a swab is useful; how to cover them; and which activities or products should be avoided during healing.
