Rash with flu: what to know

A viral illness can coincide with a widespread rash, but the rash may also come from a recently started medicine, a heat-related flare, or an unrelated condition. Note its texture, colour, location, itch, tenderness, and timing against the first fever or respiratory symptoms. Drug Rash is particularly relevant when the eruption followed a new prescription or over-the-counter product. Contact Dermatitis can follow a topical remedy or adhesive. The appearance alone cannot confirm that influenza caused the rash.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, and keep the skin cool with loose clothing. Use only familiar, gentle skin products and avoid scratching. Photograph the rash in good light and list every medicine, supplement, and topical product taken recently, including when each was started. Do not stop an essential prescribed medicine without medical advice, but contact the prescriber promptly if the rash began after it.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, confusion, collapse, purple or bruise-like spots, skin peeling, painful widespread redness, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Seek prompt assessment for a high or persistent fever, marked drowsiness, dehydration, rapidly spreading rash, or a rash that starts soon after a medicine. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with weak immunity should seek advice early.
