What should you know about a rash with swollen lips?

A rash with swollen lips can signal angioedema, especially when swelling starts suddenly or affects breathing. Swelling may affect the lips, face, tongue, throat, or deeper tissues, and the skin may show raised itchy areas or no visible rash.

Angioedema can follow food, medicine, an insect sting, or contact with a trigger, but it can also occur without an obvious cause. It may happen with hives, warmth, or itching. Lip swelling can also result from irritation, infection, injury, or a dental problem, so the timing and accompanying symptoms matter. A sudden episode after a known exposure deserves prompt medical advice even if breathing is normal.

Stop the suspected new exposure if you can do so safely and note what happened immediately beforehand. Remove lipstick, lip products, or foods still in the mouth. Do not take a medicine you have previously been told to avoid. If a clinician has given you an emergency allergy plan, follow it. Keep a photograph of the swelling and list recent medicines, foods, stings, and products for the assessment.

Call emergency services immediately for tongue or throat swelling, hoarse voice, trouble breathing, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, faintness, vomiting with widespread symptoms, or rapidly worsening swelling. Do not wait to see whether it settles. Obtain urgent medical assessment for new lip swelling with hives or a rash, even when the airway feels clear. Recurrent episodes also need medical review.
