What should you know about rash and streptococcus?

A rash with possible streptococcal illness needs assessment of the skin, throat symptoms, fever, and overall condition. The word streptococcus refers to a group of bacteria, and different infections can produce different skin findings.

A fine, rough rash with fever and sore throat may occur during a streptococcal throat illness. A separate skin infection may instead cause a focused area of redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, crust, or fluid. A rash without these features may have another explanation, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, heat rash, ringworm, or a reaction to a medicine.
