What should you know about a sandpaper-like rash?

Dry or inflamed skin can make many tiny raised areas feel rough. Atopic dermatitis may itch and crack, while contact dermatitis can begin after a new cleanser, fabric, fragrance, or topical product. Heat Rash tends to appear in warm, sweaty areas. Psoriasis may create persistent, scaly plaques. A widespread rough rash with fever or a sore throat needs prompt medical assessment because an infectious illness can also cause this appearance.

Stop newly introduced fragranced products, wash gently with lukewarm water, and apply a plain moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Wear loose, breathable clothing and avoid overheating. Do not scrub, peel, or apply several medicated creams at once; these can increase irritation and make the pattern harder to interpret.

Contact a clinician if the rash persists, spreads, becomes painful, or interferes with sleep. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, faintness, high fever, skin peeling, blisters, or sores involving the eyes or mouth.

Ask what the texture and distribution suggest, whether a recent medicine or product could be involved, which moisturiser is suitable, and what changes should trigger urgent review.
