Rash on the upper body: how to assess it

Necklines, straps, jewellery, and shirt fabrics can point toward Contact Dermatitis. Sweat beneath clothing may contribute to Heat Rash. Atopic Dermatitis causes itchy inflamed skin, while Psoriasis may show thicker plaques with scale. Ringworm tends to be scaly and ring-shaped; Scabies can cause intense itch, often worse at night. Intertrigo is more likely where skin surfaces touch and moisture remains. A new medicine can cause Drug Rash, especially when spots appear in several areas.

Keep a brief timeline of new products, medicines, illness, travel, sweating, and contact with anyone who has an itchy rash. Rinse off possible irritants, change into loose clean clothing, and keep skin folds dry. Use a cool compress for short periods and avoid fragranced products. Arrange an examination if the rash is spreading or has a distinctive ring, scale, crust, or blister, because different causes need different treatments.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, faintness, widespread blistering, peeling skin, severe skin pain, or sores affecting the eyes or mouth. Seek prompt care for fever with rapid spread, purple or bruise-like marks, pus, or a reaction after a new medicine. A non-urgent appointment is sensible when itching disrupts sleep, the rash persists, or it keeps returning.
