Rash on the tummy: common clues and next steps

Irritation from a waistband, buckle, detergent, adhesive, or skincare product may cause Contact Dermatitis. Warm, sweaty skin can develop Heat Rash, while rubbing and moisture in a fold can lead to Intertrigo. Dry itchy areas may be Atopic Dermatitis. Ringworm often creates a scaly advancing edge, whereas Psoriasis can create thicker, clearly outlined plaques. Scabies may cause severe night-time itch and can affect close contacts. A new medicine can trigger Drug Rash across more than one body area.

Remove suspected irritants one at a time and avoid tight waistbands while the skin settles. Clean gently, dry by patting rather than rubbing, and keep the area cool. Use a plain moisturiser on dry, unbroken skin if it has been tolerated before. Do not scratch, pop blisters, or use leftover prescription medicine. If the rash has a ring, marked scale, or rapid spread, arrange an examination before selecting an antifungal or steroid product.

Call emergency services for a rash with breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or tongue, faintness, extensive blistering, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Seek same-day medical advice for fever, rapidly spreading redness, purple spots, severe pain, pus, or a rash that appears soon after a new medicine. Make an appointment if the problem persists, returns, or is not improving with gentle care.
