Rash on nose: what should I know?

Dry, flaky skin can follow cold air, heat, frequent wiping, harsh cleansers, or a damaged skin barrier. Contact Dermatitis may appear after a new cosmetic, sunscreen, fragrance, mask, or topical product. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis can affect the nose and nearby skin. A scaly patch with a more defined edge may be Ringworm, while a rash that begins after a medicine may be a Drug Rash. Bumps around the nose can have several causes, so colour and appearance alone are not enough to diagnose it.

Clean gently with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a bland moisturiser to dry outer skin and avoid picking, squeezing, scrubbing, or layering multiple active products. Stop a newly introduced cosmetic or skin treatment if it coincides with the rash. Use soft tissues, change damp face coverings, and wash reusable masks as directed. Do not place steroid or antibiotic creams inside the nostrils unless a clinician prescribes them. Photograph the area if it changes.

Arrange a clinical review if the rash lasts, recurs, spreads around the eyes, crusts, bleeds, or affects the nostrils. Seek urgent care for rapid swelling of the nose, lips, or face; trouble breathing; fever with spreading redness; severe pain; pus; or a blistering or peeling rash. Eye pain or vision changes alongside facial skin changes require urgent assessment.

Ask whether the appearance fits Contact Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Ringworm, or another condition; whether an inside-the-nose product is safe; which ingredients to avoid; and what symptoms should prompt urgent review.
