Rash on my hands: what should I know?

Notice whether the skin is dry, cracked, scaly, blistered, swollen, ring-shaped, or oozing. Itching often accompanies eczema or an allergic reaction, while burning and soreness can follow repeated washing, disinfectants, solvents, or wet work. A rash between the fingers may also occur with scabies or contact dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis can affect the hands, and psoriasis may form thicker, sharply defined scaly patches. Ringworm can produce an enlarging scaly edge. These patterns overlap, so the rash alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.

Pause newly introduced soaps, gloves, fragrances, cleaning products, and topical medicines if they seem connected, while continuing essential hygiene. Wash with lukewarm water, use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and apply a plain moisturiser after washing. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a soft cotton layer underneath if sweating worsens the rash. Do not scratch, burst blisters, or share towels. Photograph changes and note exposures, work tasks, and whether both hands are affected. A clinician can choose treatment after examining the pattern.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, painful, cracked, or not settling with gentle skin care. Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing redness or swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, red streaks, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread blistering or peeling rash. Prompt review is also sensible when a hand rash interferes with movement, sleep, or work.

Ask whether the pattern fits Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Ringworm, or another condition; whether any product or workplace exposure should stop; which moisturiser or medicine is suitable for broken skin; and what changes should trigger earlier review.
