Rash on foot: what to know

A rash on the top of the foot may follow footwear, straps, dyes, or a product and fit Contact Dermatitis. Peeling between toes or a spreading scaly edge can occur with Ringworm. Moisture and rubbing may contribute to Heat Rash or Intertrigo. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis may produce dry, inflamed, or thickened patches. Scabies is another possibility when there is intense itch and similar symptoms elsewhere. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Clean the area gently, dry it well, and avoid the suspected shoe, sock, cosmetic, or chemical exposure. Wear breathable footwear and change socks when damp. Keep broken skin protected from rubbing, but avoid picking scales or blisters. Do not combine several medicated creams without advice, particularly if the rash is on a sensitive or cracked area. Take a clear photograph and record changes in size, sensation, and surface.

Seek urgent attention for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, warmth with fever, pus, red streaks, or skin that turns dark. Prompt review is sensible for a deep crack, a spreading blistering rash, or any foot problem in a person with diabetes or poor circulation. Make an appointment when the rash persists, repeatedly returns, affects the nails, or interferes with walking.

Ask what features distinguish Contact Dermatitis from Ringworm or Psoriasis, whether testing is needed, and which cleanser or treatment is suitable. Tell the clinician about new footwear, exercise, household exposures, medicines, and previous episodes.
