What should you know about rash in pubic area?

Shaving, waxing, tight clothing, sweat and fragranced washes can inflame the skin or irritate hair follicles. A sharply bordered, scaly rash may fit a fungal condition; intense night itching or affected household contacts may suggest scabies. Plaques elsewhere can occur with psoriasis, and eczema can affect the pubic skin. Seek prompt medical care for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, pus, blisters, open sores, fever or difficulty passing urine. Arrange an appointment for a rash that persists, recurs after hair removal, involves the genitals themselves or is accompanied by unusual discharge. If a new sexual exposure is a concern, pause sexual contact until assessed and ask about appropriate testing.
