Rash in between fingers: what should you know?

Frequent handwashing, detergents, gloves, rings, and trapped moisture can inflame the delicate web spaces. Eczema may cause dryness, cracking, and itch. A fungal rash can be scaly or extend along the hand. Scabies often causes intense itch, commonly worse at night, with small bumps or burrows and possible symptoms in close contacts. These patterns overlap, so appearance alone is not enough.

Rinse off irritants, dry carefully between each finger, remove suspected rings during washing, and use a fragrance-free moisturizer on intact dry skin. Wear protective gloves with a soft lining for wet tasks and change them if damp. Do not share towels, and avoid steroid or antifungal combinations left over from another problem unless a clinician recommends them.

Get prompt medical help for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, red streaks, fever, severe pain, or reduced finger movement. Seek urgent advice for facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Arrange an assessment if night-time itch, household itching, cracks, or spreading scale persists.

Ask whether testing is needed for fungus or scabies, which hand products should be avoided, how to protect household contacts, and how long to use any prescribed treatment.
