Rash identifier: what should you know?

Useful observations include whether the skin is flat, raised, scaly, blistered, ring-shaped, crusted, or oozing; whether it itches, burns, or hurts; and whether it is limited to one area or spreading. Note recent medicines, new products, travel, contact with another person with itching, fever, and the timing of onset. Similar-looking rashes can have different causes.

Take clear photos from near and farther away, include a familiar object for scale, and record changes over time. Keep the routine simple with gentle washing and a bland moisturizer if the skin is dry. Avoid scratching, sharing towels, or applying several new treatments at once, since these can irritate the skin or obscure the original pattern. A clinician may need to examine the rash directly.

Seek emergency help for breathing trouble, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, extensive blistering, skin peeling, severe skin pain, or sores involving the mouth or eyes. Arrange prompt review for fever, pus, rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, or a rash that follows a new medicine.

Ask which features are most diagnostic, whether testing is needed, which products to stop, and what change would require urgent reassessment. Show photos from the first day as well as the current appearance.
