Rash from sun screen: what to know

Sunscreen reactions may cause itching, redness, small bumps, burning, or scaling where the product touched. A reaction can be caused by an ingredient, by the product trapping heat and sweat, or by sunlight interacting with a substance on the skin. Rash on covered and uncovered areas may suggest different causes. Contact dermatitis is one possibility, but a clinician may also consider heat rash, infection, or a flare of an existing condition.

Stop the suspected sunscreen and wash the affected skin gently. Keep the bottle or take a clear image of its full ingredient list. Until you receive advice, choose shade, protective clothing, and a hat rather than experimenting with several replacement products. Cool compresses can ease discomfort. Avoid scratching, fragranced lotions, and exfoliating acids while the skin barrier is irritated.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, throat tightness, marked facial swelling, collapse, or widespread hives. Seek same-day care for blistering, peeling, severe pain, eye symptoms, fever, or fast spread. A recurring rash after different products should be assessed for ingredient sensitivity.

Ask whether the rash is more consistent with contact dermatitis, photosensitivity, or heat irritation. Ask whether testing is appropriate and which sun-protection methods or ingredients you can try later.
