Rash from sun on the face: what to know

Sun can leave facial skin red, warm, tender, itchy, or dotted with small bumps. In some people, light exposure triggers a photosensitive reaction; products on the face can also become irritating in sunlight. An existing condition such as atopic dermatitis may flare. The location, whether the rash is itchy or painful, and whether it appears after a product help guide assessment. A facial rash does not by itself identify one diagnosis.

Move into shade and rinse the face gently if a product may be contributing. Use a cool damp cloth, avoid rubbing, and pause fragranced cosmetics, exfoliants, and new skincare. Wear a hat and use physical barriers to limit further exposure. Photograph the rash in good light and note recent medicines, skincare, and outdoor exposure. Facial skin is sensitive, so ask a pharmacist before using a medicated cream near the eyes.

Get urgent help for swelling around the eyes or lips, breathing trouble, faintness, or widespread hives. Prompt assessment is needed for eye pain, vision changes, blisters, peeling, severe tenderness, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. Arrange a routine review if episodes return after light exposure or do not improve.
