What should you know about rash from strawberries?

An allergy may cause itchy hives, flushing or swelling soon after eating; mouth itching, vomiting, cough or wheeze can occur with other symptoms. Juice touching the lips or skin can irritate, especially when the skin barrier is already dry or inflamed. A rash that remains limited to a contact area may fit [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/), while an unrelated flare of [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) is also possible. The appearance alone cannot confirm the trigger.

Stop eating the suspected food until a clinician has helped clarify the reaction, and avoid deliberate home testing. Rinse juice from the skin, use a cool compress and keep a record of the food form, amount, timing, symptoms and any exercise or new medicine around the episode. Do not share food restrictions with children or remove broad food groups without professional guidance. If symptoms are mild but recurrent, arrange an allergy or primary-care review.

Call emergency services immediately for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, voice change, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or face, especially when more than one body system is affected. Widespread hives with repeated vomiting or dizziness also needs urgent attention. A rapidly worsening rash, blisters or skin peeling requires prompt medical assessment.

Ask whether the episode sounds like allergy, irritation or another rash; whether testing is useful; what foods or products to avoid for now; and what emergency plan applies if symptoms recur. Bring photographs and the ingredient label if the strawberries were in a packaged food or dessert.
