What should you know about rash from space heater?

Close, repeated heat can dry the outer skin and cause redness, itching, mottled patches or a net-like brown discoloration. This pattern is often linked to heat exposure rather than an allergy, but a heater can also worsen [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) or [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/). Pain, tenderness, blisters or peeling suggest more significant heat injury. A rash in a fold or under sweaty clothing points toward a different issue such as [Intertrigo](/conditions/intertrigo/).

Stop direct exposure and reposition the heater so warm air is not focused on one body area. Cool mildly irritated skin with a clean, cool damp cloth; do not apply ice directly. Use a bland moisturiser, drink fluids normally and avoid hot showers, scrubbing and fragranced products on the patch. Never sleep with a heater close to uncovered skin, and keep it on a stable surface away from fabrics. Do not break blisters; cover them loosely if they rub against clothing.

Get medical advice if discoloration persists after stopping exposure, the patch is painful, blistered, numb or expanding, or the rash keeps returning. Seek urgent care for a large burn, severe pain, extensive peeling, fever, confusion, breathing trouble, or swelling of the face or mouth. A persistent rash may need evaluation for [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/) or another cause.

Ask whether the appearance fits heat irritation, a burn or another rash; whether any cream is suitable; and how long color change should be observed. Tell the clinician how close the heater was, how long exposure lasted, whether the skin was covered, and whether blisters or pain developed.
