Rash from Cat Allergy: What to Know

Skin symptoms may occur after touching a cat, being licked or scratched, or contacting surfaces carrying allergen particles. Hives are raised, itchy areas that can appear and fade in different places. A contact reaction may be limited to the area that touched the animal, while eczema can remain dry and irritated. Cat allergy can also cause sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy eyes, or wheezing. Contact Dermatitis and Atopic Dermatitis can resemble an allergy-related rash, and Ringworm may spread through animal contact but is not an allergic reaction.

Keep a record of exposure, onset, body sites, other symptoms, and whether symptoms improve away from the cat. This helps separate a pattern from coincidence.

Wash hands after touching the cat and avoid rubbing your eyes or scratching your skin. Keep the cat out of the bedroom if possible, launder clothing after close contact, and clean frequently touched surfaces. If a scratch breaks the skin, wash it gently and monitor it. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser for dry skin. A clinician or pharmacist can discuss suitable antihistamine or allergy treatment, especially if you have asthma, are pregnant, or take other medicines. Do not apply a product to broken skin without advice.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt advice for facial swelling, widespread hives, a painful or infected-looking scratch, fever, pus, or eye involvement. Arrange a routine assessment if reactions recur, interfere with sleep, or continue despite avoiding contact.
