What should you know about rash due to fever?

A rash with fever can signal an infection or inflammatory illness, so assess its pattern and the person’s overall condition. Note when each symptom began, whether the rash blanches when pressed, and whether it is painful, itchy, or changing quickly.

Viral illnesses can cause fever, tiredness, cough, sore throat, or a spreading rash. Chickenpox often produces itchy spots that change into fluid-filled blisters. A localised hot, tender, swollen area may fit cellulitis rather than a general viral rash. Fever can also occur with respiratory infections such as common cold, COVID-19, croup, acute bronchitis, or bronchiolitis; symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Encourage fluids and rest, keep clothing light, and check the person regularly. Use fever medicine only as directed for that person, considering age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Do not scratch, burst blisters, or share towels. Keep away from vulnerable people if a contagious illness is possible, and arrange clinical advice when the rash is new or unexplained.

Seek emergency care if the person has breathing difficulty, confusion, unusual drowsiness, a stiff neck, seizure, collapse, or purple spots that do not fade under pressure. Get urgent assessment for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, dehydration, repeated vomiting, or a child who looks seriously unwell.

Ask what infections fit the symptoms, whether testing or isolation is needed, and which fever treatments are suitable. Mention travel, sick contacts, new medicines, vaccinations, allergies, and any immune or long-term health condition.
