Rash Caused by Sun: What to Know

Sunburn usually causes tender, hot, reddened skin after substantial exposure. A light-triggered rash may be itchy or bumpy and appear on exposed areas, sometimes after a new medicine, fragrance, or skincare product. Heat and sweat can add prickly spots. Atopic dermatitis may flare with dryness and irritation, while contact dermatitis can occur where sunscreen or another product was applied. A rash that forms rings, affects covered skin, or keeps returning needs a different explanation.

Move out of direct sunlight, cool the skin with a damp cloth, and drink fluids. Use loose clothing and avoid fragranced products on the affected area. Do not deliberately re-expose the rash to test it. Check the leaflet for any medicine started recently and speak with the prescriber before changing a prescribed treatment. Once the skin has settled, use shade, protective clothing, and a suitable broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed.

Arrange assessment if the rash returns after small amounts of sun, spreads to covered areas, or does not improve after leaving the sun. Get urgent help for extensive blistering, severe pain, fever, confusion, faintness, facial swelling, trouble breathing, or skin peeling. A clinician may review medicines and products and examine whether the pattern fits a light reaction, infection, or another inflammatory condition.
